I was listening to Plies on a Wild 98.7 – a Tampa, Florida radio station (it was posted online; originally broadcast was on Tuesday). After the Deejays played “Somebody (Loves You)” from The Definition of Real:
- a single mother of two calls – she lost her future husband, job, and was in the process of losing her house
- she thanks Plies for recording such a heartfelt song (“Somebody (Loves You)”)
- she says she’s on her way to a job interview
- Plies asks where – and gets directions – saying he’ll be by after the show waiting for her to give her some money to help her out
- the woman starts crying, as do all the Deejays in the radio station

Now, I know a lot of people think Plies is what’s wrong with rap, but when was the last time an entertainer did something like this?
Props to Plies.

That’s nice. I mean, it’s nice to help a single mom in need, but this is more of a publicity stunt than anything else.
A couple hundred bucks to get a few hip hop news sites to report the “story”? It’s worth it. It’s not like rappers don’t do charitable things though, we just don’t hear about it unless they do it on the radio.
Did you listen or are you going off my summary?
You hear about rappers doing charitable things all the time in the news. Record labels love good publicity for their artists. Notice how almost anytime T.I. is in the news now it’s for something charitable. I can think of the G-Unit vs DTP basketball game as another very public example of rappers doing charitable things.
I think it’s easy to be cynical about this and assume it’s all set-up, but the moment made it seem genuine. Plus, the djs started crying…even the dude lol.
I have Plies on my Google Alerts, no one is really reporting about it. That’s where I step in. Preciate the feedback, though.
Oh I believe that she was a real caller, things really did get emotional in the studio, Plies did spend twenty minutes meeting the lady and throwing some change towards her to put food on her table and condoms on her man, but I think it’s a pretty transparent move.
Maybe it’s because I can’t take him seriously as a genuine person after shooting at fans dancing to him perform at a Gainesville club a couple years ago. His reason? He was mad at the club’s DJ for cutting his mic off, as his performance was cutting into the next clown’s stage time.
I think that if the caller had approached him on the street, in a supermarket, or at a Popeye’s and started crying about her life, he probably would have pulled his gun out on her too.
Society would be much better off if he stopped rapping and spent that time in the soup kitchen.
I really like what you’re doing with the site, btw.
I hear you. He didn’t shoot anyone, though. His brother, Big Gates, and another man are facing charges. I believe they were shooting at Lil Boosie’s fleeing entourage, not fans. Unfortunately fans got hit. None the less – very stupid.
I don’t think he would pull out a gun on a fan who approached him for money. The reality is this dudes actions speak louder than his words. His work with Bid Long, his commitment to rapping about his true experiences, unfiltered.
I think Plies is far from being a skilled lyricist, but a lot of his songs teach valuable lessons. You just have to skip over songs like “Shit Bag” and “Rob Yo Pussy Ass” to find them, ha.
