Asher Roth Will Never Be A Rap Star (Part 2)

How can they market me better?
Yesterday I brought you 3 reasons why Asher Roth will never be a rap star/have a long-lasting career in the rap industry. Read all about it HERE.

My first 3 reasons sparked some controversy in the comments section. This is what one reader had to say,

I’m not saying you need to like the dude, or that he is the freshest, I just think your points on why he won’t succeed are pretty fuckin’ stupid. I think you should do your homework and get back on the internet and pay close attention to whats going on in the world of music.

Not everyone was anti-Cfro. John-Henry of Hiptics had this to say,

Asher Roth is similar to Mickey Avalon, they are niche rappers with limited marketability, and appeal. At best, he will be a novelty, a white humpty-hump of the 21st century. Rap music, for many white suburban kids, hip-hop is half escape, half action movie. Most people who purchased Ready to Die never sold crack, spent time in jail, but still could relate with the former King of New York because at some point in time they felt like their life was “played out like a jeri curl.” Rap for suburban kids is a fantasy land that rarely speaks of consequences, and they are able to relate with it on a somewhat microscopic level. Whether it’s feeling “ready to die” or hustling dime bags out of your dorm room your freshman year of college. Asher doesn’t have that same action/escape effect. He is right there with us. I take him about as seriously as the Smirnoff Iced Tea Preppy Rappers.

As promised, here’s my 4th and 5th reason why Asher Roth will never be a rap star.

    4. His performance skills need serious work. Look at him perform in Atlanta. That’s what I would look like performing. Again, he’s too normal. He has no mystique. Stars do. Yet another great reason to give Mr. Roth two more years to grow. After all, concert skills pay the bills, especially in 2008 (when was the last time you bought a CD?)

    5. His crew (or lack thereof). 50 Cent has Yayo and G-Unit. Eminem had Proof and D-12. Asher has the kid that helped you with your Chemistry homework. And the rest of the crew has as much personality as the Chemistry book.

Asher Roth does not flow. He says the same thing over and over and over and over again. Watch the MTV Spring Break videos. Anyone can put together a bunch of jibberish that rhymes and then repeat the chorus several times. If you watch the videos also, you see the crowd get hyper over his one hit wonder ‘I Love College’, but the other songs the crowd just goes kind of dormant. To be honest I think all of Asher’s “raps” are very shallow, immature and childish. Most sucessful hip-hop artists tell a story about their life, problems growing up poor, drug dealing to try to live the American dream, ego and of course rivalry between gangs or crews. Asher with his suburbian silver spoon in his mouth knows nothing about that, If he loves college so much he should go back, continue his education and stop trying to play hip-hop game. I agree with most of the people on here they are looking to make a quick buck off him and he will just be a one hit wonder.

    3. I’m not a big fan of Mr. Asher. Mostly because there would be no Asher Roth if Eminem Hadn’t taken a (is it 4 or 5 year) hiatus. Literally everything about Asher Roth sans his lyrical content is 100% reminiscent of Eminem. The voice inflections the whiny delivery. Everything. Asher Roth is literally what would have happened had the Good Lord pooped on the world and allowed Eminem (Our greatest White rapper ever) to go to college. The pain and the distress you feel in Em’s delivery is potent, his word play is cunning and most importantly, both whites and black can fully relate to his content. I’m not sure Asher Roth’s reception will be anywhere near as warm. He might have to talk about some fights or a serious run-in with a professor or girlfriend to get the mass appeal Eminem commands. Asher Roth? As irrelevant as Bow-Wow before him, if he doesn’t change his direction.

I don’t get it people are saying because he’s from the suburbs he shouldn’t rap because he has no experience in gangs, drug dealing, violence etc. but what’s sad is that is what we’ve come to expect now wju does rap have to be that they say rap is about telling a story and delivering a message and while i agree Asher doesn’t do that all the time he does do it in some songs. He went to college, made a song about it and bam kids liked it can you fault him? He just wrote a song about what he knows. if Asher came with a song about drugs, violence, crimes etc. and you found out he was fake you’d be bashing him even worse

    5. Jen says:

I agree. For all the rappers out there, like T.I and Weezy, they talk about how they want kids to see them as a postitive influence, so I mean whats the big deal about a white kid making a song that isn’t talking about “fucking hoes” and “shootin’ up the place.” They rap about what they know and he raps about what he knows. If you don’t like him, don’t listen to him. If he is to “white” for you, leave him to the “white” kids that like him. Rap was not made for gang members to tell their life story. It is not in the definition, thats just what the market made it. And he is just doing his thing. Biggie Smalls, one of the greatest, if not the greatest rappers (in my opinion) was actually a really smart kid that didn’t have to do what he did, he chose to, so do you talk shit about a man that chose to live a life of risk and doing that to his bright future. No of course not.

There we go, another Eminem clone. Says the same thing over and over, at least Eminem has good lyrics. This clown has none, or what he has is lame as his looks! What a total piece of shit. Every time I hear that shit on tv I want to bust the fucking thing before I can even get to the remote to turn it. Talk about a pathetic ass rapper wannabe. Eminem probably thinks this guy is a tool also for stealing his style! If any of you tards like this shit you need to go seek some mental help QUICK!

Ok so what OldSkoolRapFan is sayin is that if you grew up in a good home, or didn’t sling dope you are not going to be a successful rapper nigga your stupid as shit. I think that dudes shit is pretty tight and yeah he needs to work on his rymes a little bit. But i think he can be as famous as any other one of these mother fuckers out here. BUT I GUESS BEING A RAPPER IS JUST FOR BLACKS RIGHT!!

JEO454 – He just can’t rap. And no rapping is not just for black guys – look at Eminem you dumbfuck. Not to mention, Weezy didn’t grow up in the hood, but is still one of the best in the game. He’s not even rapping in I love college, he’s just telling us about what every single college kid does every night. Thank you Asher Roth, I didn’t know that

    10. Okay seriously Asher Roth sucks. His song “I Love College” is so ridiculous. Yes, you were born with rich parents so you got everything you ever asked for. Got to college for what? A Philosophy degree? Make a stupid rap that got famous because 80% of the college population have their parents pay for everything and never have had a job in their life besides “Work study” which is total bullshit. I cannot wait to see all these kids from college fail in real life. For example, I work at a subway and this kid came in and used his credit card to pay. It didn’t work. So he gave me anotehr one. Didnt work again. THIRD FUCKING one didnt work either. So he pretty much threw a temper tantrum like a little baby and he seriously looked like he was ready to cry. Eyes were red and watery. He reminds me of Asher Roth. Fuck you useless college kids with a silver spoon. I CANNOT WAIT until you go into the real world and fail. Oh how I will laugh. Then you can get a job at Starbucks with the Creative Writing and Women’s Studies majors, smoke pot, and talk about “ideas” no one gives a fucking shit about. FLAME PLEASE!!! :DDD

I just think it’s ridiculous that, even if he is a short term buzz, America would resort to this. I guess it’s not surprising since a lot of hip hop has been getting ignorant, lyrically (not to start a fight). I just feel, as an individual, that we, as a country, have hit a new all time low. Props on this site.

    12. Matty Danger says:

Stop hatin on the kid so much. Like said before, he’s not trying to be someone or something he’s not. And the idiot at the beginning who said he’d bet actual money that Eminem would never co-sign Ash Roth is dead wrong – it already happened. Asher Roth at times is quite good – his delivery…I’m feelin’ that “Lark on My Go Kart” track even though it’s really about absolutely nothing, its a fun track to listen to driving. People are such critics when it comes to music, when if they ever attempted it, they’d fail miserably. Keep doin’ ya thing Ash.

    13. Cry more bitches says:

Asher has a different style and is fairly talented at what he does. He makes hip hop music and raps about what he knows and what relates to people. So what if one of his songs is about college? I’d rather listen to a song about college than about some crack dealer piece of shit selling drugs, killing people, and treating women like trash, but that’s become cool in mainstream hip hop hasn’t it?

At the very least, his version of A Milli deserves praise purely for its lyrical content. Finally a hip hop artist with the balls to say give a little instead of being a money hungry cock sucker.

I don’t even like Asher Roth very much but the pure ignorance and stupidity of some of these comments and the main article in general is unbelievable.

-Huh? Have you heard his music? It may not use the terms “bitches” and “hoes,” but it’s pretty much the same… ‘cept it’s… crap. His music isn’t all about what he relates to, or even what the average guy relates to. It’s about what a rich white kid can relate to. I’m white and I don’t even like Asher Roth.

Quote: “He’s not even rapping in I love college, he’s just telling us about what every single college kid does every night. Thank you Asher Roth, I didn’t know that”
-Not this college kid. Fuck that shit.

It’s not about where you were born, what you did, or what you think about subjects. It matters if you can rap and if you can do it good. Asher Roth can’t rap. He just sucks. Would I rather hear a rapper talk about shooting people for pissing him off? Well, even though I hate that shit too, it’s better than this guy.

    16. Schaef says:

First of all you need to get it through your head that rap stars aren’t only respected for their hustle. Although MC’s like Biggie and Cube were some of the hardest gangsters to hit the rap scene it does not mean that they dominate the industry. The emphasis of rap stars these days is on “swagger”, a term that to me means how to become famous without being talented. Asher Roth will not become the next rap legend because he isn’t street enough, that I agree with. However just because his lyrics are not good, and he’s singing, doesn’t mean he wont become famous (SEE KID CUDI.) At the end of the day the only thing you can say is hip hop is dead and the new industry is the flashy mutant incest child of the original Original hop hop MC’s and the true gangster rappers who appeared in the next generation.

The only way to save hip hop is by going back to the roots. KRS-One put it most elegantly in My Philosophy,
“Who gets weaker? The king or the teacher
It’s not about a salary it’s all about reality
Teachers teach and do the world good
kings just rule and most are never understood
If you were to rule or govern a certain industry
All inside this room right now would be in misery
No one would get along nor sing a song
’cause everyone’d be singing for the king, am I wrong?!
