Fat Joe is all about speaking his mind and when he received news of Daddy Yankee’s endorsement of Presidential Candidate John McCain he spoke his mind. More on that below. The hip-hop community as a whole has backed Obama’s campaign, but Daddy Yankee is nothing if not a pioneer. With all the backlash Daddy Yankee has received for his endorsement, the fact that he is actually on the stump endorsing a candidate shows he’s not an apathetic passive supporter, and he thinks he’s doing the right thing. No matter your position in society a person has the right to endorse whoever they like.
Latino’s are usually more socially conservative and their views have a lot in common with McCain’s platform. One thing that sticks out however is McCain’s tight hold on protecting America from immigration, which obviously would upset much of the latino population. It remains to be seen whether Daddy Yankee’s support of McCain will swing any voters over to McCain in this close election.
As much of vocal Hip Hop seems to support Barack Obama as America’s best fit Presidential candidate, Reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee shocked some in his staunch endorsement for Republican candidate John McCain.
Earlier this week, in an Arizona high school, the Interscope Records platinum performer announced his support, and spoke to the urban youth on the candidate’s strengths, via a YouTube clip, posted below. Another artist of Latin heritage, Fat Joe [click to read], told MTV late Thursday, that the Puerto Rican Yankee is a “sellout” for doing so.
“I’m talking to little cousins that like [Yankee] and all that, and they’re starting to believe that John McCain is [the best candidate]. I can’t have that,” said the Bronx-born member of D.I.T.C.
Noting the affect the endorsement had, the Hip Hop veteran added, “I felt like I wanted to vomit when I seen that. The reason why I called him a sellout is because I feel he did that for a [publicity] look, rather than the issues that are affecting his people that look up to him. How could you want John McCain in office when George Bush and the Republicans already have half a million people losing their homes in foreclosure? We’re fighting an unjust war. It’s the Latinos and black kids up in the frontlines, fighting that war. … We over here trying to take the troops out of Iraq and bring peace. This guy immediately wants war. If not with Iraq or Afghanistan, he’ll start a new one with Iran. I feel real disgusted that Daddy Yankee would do that. Either he did that for a look, or he’s just not educated on politics.”
In November, Joe expressed positive support of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to HipHopDX, as the two competed for the Democratic bid at the time.

I recently did a post on the whole Fat Joe/Daddy Yankee/John McCain thing and honestly as insane as it sounds, I think it’s Daddy Yankee’s right to endorse whoever he wants and I don’t think anyone should be critical of it the way Fat Joe is. Some may say Daddy Yankee has a strong Latino fan base who he owes it to to not back someone like McCain but he Daddy Yankee’s vote is his own and I think Fat Joe should keep his comments to himself and just make sure he and everyone he knows votes on election day.
There’s nothing wrong with Fat Joe saying he thinks Daddy Yankee is making a poor decision. Fat Joe hasn’t made any headlines recently and he strongly endorses Obama. Not all latino voters are voting for Obama, so Daddy Yankee endorsing McCain should please a lot of his fans in that demographic. This election is going to come down to the wire. There is some misperception that Obama is definitely winning the election. Obama has a larger audible fan base than McCain, but the pre-election polls show them neck and neck . I don’t think Daddy Yankee’s comments or Fat Joe’s rebuttal will make much of a difference in the outcome of the election.
Fat Joe is entitled to his opinion as is Daddy Yankee. And you’re right Ben, this won’t effect the election one bit.
Why? Fat Joe, shut up! The man likes McCain, he’s entitled to his opinion. Plus, Daddy Yankee is smart. John McCain is a much better choice than Barack Obama.
