Lil Wayne is more like a rock star who performs rap songs. He puts on a great show. I saw him perform in Columbus Ohio last December. GET MONEY!
Lil Wayne was all smiles Saturday night when he took the stage at the BOK Center.
And why shouldn’t the multiplatinum selling artist be? After all, GQ Magazine named him its “Man Of The Year” for 2007. Rolling Stone magazine dubbed him “Best MC of 2008,” and music magazine Blender named him the “Best Rock Star Alive” for 2008.
Despite the relative lack of listeners — the center appeared less than half-full — Lil Wayne took his crowd seriously. His one-hour set included fan favorites “Fireman,” “Lollipop” and “Got Money.” He threw in a quick cover of “Help” by the Beatles. Notably absent from his performance was his hit “Make It Rain.”
Rather than performing each of his songs from start to finish, Lil Wayne opted for shortened remixes of his catalogue, allowing him to fit in more songs, which his enthusiastic fans seem to appreciate.
The amiable crowd spent the concert on its feet, dancing and singing along.
The crowd cheered the rapper’s every move, from his initial appearance to the end of his set, when he lip-synched Whitney Houston’s version
“I Will Always Love You” as a show of support to his fans. The show lacked the glamorous effects of previous concerts, such as Kenny Chesney’s overpowering slide-show backdrops.
Instead, Lil Wayne opted for a straight-forward concert where the star took center stage. A lineup of friends and fans flanked Wayne the entire night, standing somewhat awkwardly toward the back of the stage for the entirety of the show.
