The first single of Ludacris’ new album Theatre of the Mind, “One More Drink” featuring T-Pain starkly contrasts most of the braggadocio-laden tracks flooding the hip-hop air waves today. It’s a catchy, humorous song with a well-produced music video to match.

T-Pain’s trademark AutoTune’d chorus synthetically wails, “If I take one more drink, I’m gon’ end of F**kin’ you, is that what you wanna do, shawty?” while Luda recounts late-night, beer-goggle powered misadventures, that only lead to regretful mornings. In the music video Luda wakes up next to a hairy beast of a woman and literally, coyote-ugly style bites off his own arm [WATCH]. For the majority of the music video Luda actually sports a prosthetic arm and attends “Drunk Daters Anonymous” hosted by Katt Williams.

Finally, we have a hit rap song that doesn’t only talk about how flawless and amazing the MC is. It’s a far step away from the usual ‘in the club to pop bottles and snatch the flyest women from their fumbling, broke boyfriends.’ It doesn’t focus on making fat stacks of cash, rolling on dubs or smoking the greenest herb while drinking the smoothest liquors. Instead, Luda talks truthfully about the dangers that face us all when we drink too much in a night club. It serves as a hilarious warning about the very real possibility you get so drunk at the bar that everything and everything looks supermodel-good, and how it inevitably leads to a harsh and ugly morning.

What’s captivating about this song is that it speaks the TRUTH about the club scene. Clubs for the most part suck, the only reason guys go is to get laid, either by bringing their girlfriend or picking one up there. I don’t think I need to tell Hiptics readers this, but sometimes when you go to a place to get drunk and get laid, somewhere in the mix your standards can be mysteriously lowered. It’s an authentic song coming straight from the life of Luda, who doesn’t seem as real when he rhymes about being hard and violent. His first album, Back for the First Time was filled with aggressive lyrics and fitted the southern-gansta sub-genre, as in “Gimme a high-five and I’ll put the nine lower then your esophagus and smack you so hard you have to come with 2-Pacalypse” It seems like Luda may have left behind the attention getting lyrics that gangsta rap provides those trying to break into the mainstream. “One More Drink” shifts away from the generic rap being produced today towards a more honest look at the common mans’ struggle in day-to-day life.

“One More Drink” Serves as a clear warning for anyone taking a chick home past 2:00AM and 7 drinks. To break it down, If you go home with a chick from the bar at close whose name you just learned, chances are she is a DOG and you are too drunk to tell. Way to go Luda, this is a public service announcement we all can use.
