Elliot Wilson on The Role of Print Media in the Internet Age

Elliot Wilson on The Role of Print Media in the Internet Age

Elliot Wilson is a hip-hop legend. I had the chance to speak with Elliot Wilson, known to his fans as YN, on the phone a little over a week ago. This is what he had to say about the role of hip-hop magazines in today’s Internet age.

Hiptics: Do you think [hip-hop] magazines still have a role, or is the role to promote the website?

Elliot Wilson: I still love magazines. I think that people just want great content. I think with magazines you want longer stories. I think with Internet you want more quick information. You want shorter Q&A’s, a little bit more concise [content].

I think there’s a lack of good magazines and there’s a lack of good websites. I think there’s more websites than ever and there’s a lot of magazines still out there, believe it or not. And most [websites and magazines] aren’t good. There’s a lack of good stuff. There’s 8 million rappers, but how many of them are really good? I just think that we have a really crazy amount of quanity and very little quality. I think the ones that are quality magazines will survive.

We’re all taking a big hit in the advertising field. Obviously it’s just a reflection of the economy and what we’re really going through in this real world.  Just like Obama’s being dealt a tough hand; If you’re a publisher you’re being dealt a tough hand. You have to adapt to the times, and downsize a little bit, and hold your place. But ultimately still deliver good content, reach a good core, it’ll keep you in business. I’m rooting for magazines. And the thing with RapRadar is I’m going to be very supportive of magazines, and pick out the good things they do.
