Now I’m assuming you’ve heard of Asher Rot; he’s a fun-loving, ex-college bro who smokes weed and plays beer pong. He also raps. You might even have read the controversial post, “Asher Roth Will Never Be A Rap Star.” I stand by it.

Anyway, Asher was promoting his album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle [read my review] partially with the help of Twitter. On a tour stop at Rutgers University, Asher tweeted something that many took the wrong way:

Asher Roth found himself in some hot stew last weekend after referencing Don Imus’ “nappy-headed ho*s” remarks via Twitter. Roth posted on his twitter page: “Been a day of rest and relaxation, sorry twitter – hanging out with nappy headed hoes.” Sound familiar? The comments spawned an outpour of criticism from the hip-hop community. Roth promptly deleted the message and later offered the following apology: “Totally just making fun of Don Imus – Sorry Scoot, not trying to be offensive…I’m extremely apologetic to anyone who took offense to my immature, bad joke.” (Source)

Do I think Asher Roth is a racist? No. Do I think that Twitter and other mediated forms of communication can distort the true intent of your humor? Yes. Be careful, rappers.
