Jay-Z Performs “Death Of AutoTune,” Sounds Like An Angry Old Guy [VIDEO]
The BET Awards were an absolute mess. Funny how the ‘highlight’ of the show is a 40 year-old rapper performing his diss song about a computer plug-in. See what Juelz told Hiptics about the song? I wonder if the exploding champagne bottles on the screen are another subliminal jab at Ron Browz/Jim Jones (think “Pop Champagne”).
I never thought I’d live to see the day when the “best rapper alive” would steal his hook from Steam.
Also, why is Hov still biting Biggie lyrics?
“Stop your bloodclot cryin, the kids, the dog, everybody dyin, no lyin”
-Notorious B.I.G. from “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Kills You”
Hiptics.com is updated every single day with your kind of hip hop:

“Funny how the ‘highlight’ of the show is a 40 year-old rapper performing his diss song about a computer plug-in.”
haha u nailed it
The song is not about auto tune man, hardly. He does not go into the plug-in at all in the song, in any lyric. This song about what the plug has done to the genre, the simplification, and the paralell of the death of hip-hop and the death of something a lot of hip-hop purists suggest contributes greatly.
This is not a is a “diss song” about auto tune, this is a plea for redirection. And, Jay-z and everyone else in music knows where he got “Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey” from, it’s more an allusion than theft. Hip-hop has always been the let me borrow/spin that genre since it’s beginning and continues with sample beats, lyric recycling, cross performer voice-overs. Jay-z is particularly known for his use of Big’s lyrics, not stealing them though. That’s his way of showing love, using someone’s stuff to contribute to his own jawns.
This article takes a shot at a legend and accuses him of making a diss song about about a plug-in. The game was all analog when Jay came along, he doesn’t mess with plug-ins.
“I use a Big verse I’m only biggin’ up my brother
Biggin’ up my borough
I’m that thorough
And I’m big enough to do it
Plus, I know my own flow is foolish.” – Jay-Z- What More Can I Say (highlighting his own humility, appreciation of Big, hometown pride, and acknowledgment of his own usage.
(Althought from CT, Steam’s origin is credited to Brooklyn as well)
1. I was poking fun at the song by saying it’s a diss about a computer plug-in, I’m surprised you took me so literally
2. KRS-One and Buckshot were already talking about autotune and what it’s doing to hip hop, Jay-Z is doing it to generate buzz for Blueprint III
3. Notice how Jay-Z was cool with autotune when his industry homeys were using it?
4. The song is about unoriginality in hip hop, yet he uses one of the most used-choruses of all time. Anyone who’s ever been to a HS basketball game knows the Steam song.
5. Jay can use BIG lyrics all he wants, but what bugs me is this: Jay is one of the best to do it, but the constant BIG biting is what keeps him from being THE #1, yet he continues to do it, even in a song about unoriginality in hip hop.
How are we supposed to be able to tell you were joking? The statement is in a heading.
If Jay isn’t #1 who is; I’m not saying I know, I’m just curious to see who it is.
And, like I said before, hip-hop, in many instances in past and present, has been the are of re-spin. Jay ain’t a thief, just a rapper.
Also, again, Jay’s beef is not with Autotune. Not to mention, his boys were using on College Dropout and Chocolate Factory, both old-school. Jay’s beef is what Autotune is doing to the game, I expect most intelligent hip-hop listeners will have a beef with Autotune’s influence on the game.
In a heading? “Funny how the ‘highlight’ of the show is a 40 year-old rapper performing his diss song about a computer plug-in.”
Maybe I should have said, “Funny how the ‘highlight’ of the show is a 40 year-old rapper performing his diss song to rappers who enjoy recording with a computer plug-in.”
The #1, I would say, is Biggie himself. It’s very subjective, though.
When did anyone use autotune on College Dropout? I don’t listen to R. Kelly all that often so I can’t dispute that it’s used on Chocolate Factory.
