Barack Obama recently announced his pick for US Surgeon General. Her name is Regina Benjamin.
Dr. Regina Benjamin is President Obama’s pick for surgeon general. The Alabama family physician has been an advocate for universal care, and is expected to have a role “at the table” in health reform, which would be an unusual degree of influence over policy for a surgeon general. Obama said Benjamin “represents what’s best about health care in America.” (Kaiser Health News, 07/14/09)
However, since Regina Benjamin is obese critics are challenging Barack Obama’s decision to name her Surgeon General. After all, obesity in America is a serious problem in America that results in higher healthcare costs and global warming so what kind of a message does Benjamin’s presence send?
Final note: I don’t feel good about calling Regina Benjamin fat. However, since she’s now the Surgeon General and will have an extreme amount of influence, I’m calling it like I see it.
