“More Than Music” showcases Nefarious‘ skills as a producer, and after just one listen, I’m confident that the instrumental album will win Nef new fans. As a supporter of Nef’s beats, I’m pleased to have something cohesive to show friends and fellow hip hop nerds. I was disappointed that all of the instrumentals on “More Than Music” were snippets, but the music is undeniable. “More Than Music” gets my stamp of approval. -Cfro
What do you think of Drake and Trey Songz‘ “Successful” music video? I’m surprised Lil Wayne wasn’t included considering he is featured on the So Far Gone version “Successful.”
(First of all, I’m back for real now. The past three days I’ve been driving on I-75, couch surfing, and moving in to a new apartment. With the Internet 100% today, Hiptics is officially back on the grind.-Cfro)
If you’re unfamiliar with Mike Posner’s music, the Michigan-native released a great mixtape earlier this summer entitled A Matter Of Time. Posner’s stoner-hit, “Drug Dealer Girl,” was featured on the free mixtape.
Earlier this month, word got out that Mike Posner signed a major record deal with J Records. Much like Drake, Posner had major labels knocking on his door as the buzz about A Matter Of Time continued to get bigger. Nice move, Mike.
Posner is a close friend of G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam recording artist Big Sean. I interviewed Big Sean earlier this summer and asked him about his relationship with the singer. Here’s what he said -
Hiptics.com: You were talking about crossing genres. I noticed you’ve been doing a lot of collaborations with [singer] Mike Posner. I was wondering as to how that relationship came to be.
Big Sean: Well me and Mike Posner been buddies before he was ‘Mike Posner’ and before I was really ‘Big Sean.’ Me and him used to go over to eachothers houses and work on music and just kick it. We’re really just friends before anything so it’s kind of crazy that me and him are both doing well in music and getting a name for ourselves. I don’t know how many other life stories are like that where people are in the industry and were really friends before. Me and him are just buddies, and we’re definitely going to keep making music together. I just talked to him yesterday actually about some new stuff.
Side Note: My homie from the 239, Zach G., got a chance to interview Posner right after he signed with J Records. Although it was not discussed in the interview, Zach was one of the first people to find out the good news. Click here to read Zach’s interview with Mike Posner.
First off, a big shout out to everyone who goes to Xavier. I appreciate the hospitality. Yesterday was a long day of driving, but I got to listen to some great hip hop including this:
The biggest news in new hip hop music this week has nothing to do with Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3. The real buzz is the recently leaked (and still unmastered) version of a hip hop super-collaboration featuring new verses from Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem. Not only does “Forever” mark the first time that Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem appeared on the same song, but it strategically positions Drake among the hip hop elite. There’s no need to speculate if Drake can keep-up with the legends; he proved it on “Forever.”
Drake is definitely in that #1 spot (hottest MC in the game) but did he outshine Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem on “Forever?” Who had the hottest verse on “Forever?” Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, or Eminem? Let me know by taking the poll of the week.-Cfro
Make sure you listen to “Forever” before you vote.
Currently, my favorite music video in the MTV Jamz rotation is Clipse ft. Pharrell “I’m Good.”
How can you not like this Clipse video? “I’m Good” feels good, looks good, and appears as if it was filmed with higher quality cameras than a lot of the latest hip hop music videos. Just ask Paul Wall.
What are some of your favorite (new) music videos?
Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem all go in over this instrumental. I think Eminem proves he can still rip any rapper (young or old) on any given instrumental based on his “Forever” performance. Eminem’s verse is by far the most unique. That says a lot when Martian Man is on the same track.
“Right now, it’s Lil Wayne, #1,” he said. “He’s hot. He’s got everything. He sings the right tunes. I’m seriously listening to all his songs right now. Really sitting down, listening to his lyrics, and he’s got his lyrics [down] pat now. He’s got his lyrics. He’s coming up like Jay-Z. He’s smooth. He’s got a different flow from Jay-Z, but lyrics-wise, he’s got it. He’s a lyricist. Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, I don’t care who comes third. These guys have the whole place on edge, man. It’s hot.” [MTV]
“Angels” is the first single from Diddy’s new group, Dirty Money (Diddy x Dawn x Kaleena). I’ve been looking for it since the 50 Cent interview (see below), and finally found it. Unfortunately, the only version of “Angels” available has tags, but it’s still pretty smooth.
Whoever arranged “Angels” = nice with it.
Earlier this summer, 50 Cent was in the middle of an interview with Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex when he started raving about Diddy’s new single. Although at the time it had no name (and Flex didn’t even know about it, yet), 50 was talking about “Angels.”
Nefarious, the producer responsible for some of the best instrumentals on Amor Jones‘ critically acclaimed Epic Failure, is releasing his own album this Friday. Nefarious‘ instrumental CD, entitled More Than Music, features a great first single. Listen to “Take My Love” and let me know what you think.
Side Note: I want to get Amor Jones and EbGb to do a collabo track over one of Nef’s beats (assuming I get to scream “WE DA BEST” over the majority of the song.) -Cfro
Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are both mentioned in Jay-Z’s collaboration with Drake, “Off That.” Above is Bill O’Reilly’s response to “Off That.” O’Reilly sarcastically compares Jigga to Otis Redding. Don’t know who Otis Redding is? Check this video.
I didn’t forget about Rush Limbaugh’s response. Limbaugh seems to find humor in being immortalized in a Jay-Z song.
Why did Jay-Z mention O’Reilly in the first place? I’m assuming because of what Bill O’Reilly had to say about Jay and Young Jeezy’s post-inauguration performance in a DC club.
I wanna thank the muthafuckas who helped [the Bush family] move their shit up out the White House. Get it moving, bitch!…My President is muthafuckin black, nigga! -Jeezy
