My Radio Station Made American Eagle Cooler Than A Polar Bears Toenail

As some of you know, I’m a DJ and the Program Director for 91.1 WDUB. The Doobie, as we’re known on campus, is ranked as one of the nation’s Top 20 Most Popular College Radio Stations (Princeton Review, 2008). WDUB broadcasts on the FM dial in metro-Columbus, and our stream is accesible pretty much anywhere in the world. We also recently became part of the iTunes college radio family. You can read more about the station on our Wikipedia page.
Last spring we were asked to create a ‘back-to-school’ playlist to be played in every American Eagle store in the United States. As the resident hip hop nerd expert, I made sure that American Eagle shoppers would experience some of the best hip hop. If my memory serves me correct, I added Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rappers Delight,” Lupe Fiasco’s “Sunshine” and The Roots’ “Guns Are Drawn” to the list. (Update: Shout out to Will, who runs the 911-blog, for finding the playlist.)
Our station manager, Jacs Fishbourne, forwarded this email from an American Eagle employee in store #190. Thought I’d share…
Hey. I’m an employee at American Eagle for 3 years, and this is by far the best BTS (Back To School) playlist ever. Love the songs. Been trying to find the playlist, but can’t find any of the info. May u please email me the AE’s playlist that u guys did?
Thanks from Store 190 in Greenwood IN,
Chris

good ol’ store #190
I’m an employee at American Eagle and the last two playlists have been the worst playlists I have ever heard anywhere in my life. The majority of the songs I have never heard before and are trite and annoying. They do not represent American Eagle. Their is no musical flow from one song to the next. Before these last couple playlists I’d have people comment all the time about how they love the music. Those comments have stopped. You have no idea how frustrating it is to listen to the crap that you loosely call music for two months. Please don’t ever dj again.
^ Thanks for checking out Hiptics.com! Sorry that you hate your job.
Most of the play list was painful. Hot Chip is not an artist. “Daylight” has one of the most boring melodic lines I have heard (it flirts with juvenile tune experimentation). And rapper’s delight? How long must a song be?
^ Rappers Delight = classic = it can be as long as it wants
I work at American Eagle as well, and I loved this playlist. It was energetic and diverse and I thought it represented the store just fine. My fellow employees and I had a blast singing along to Rapper’s Delight for 8 minutes. Hah. So thanks, DJ.
