Freddie Gibbs Talks Rick Ross’ Correctional Officer Past [Exclusive]

Freddie Gibbs, Cfro Custom

Hiptics.com: Something that I was really happy to hear you talk about was Rick Ross just being a…being a fraud I guess would be the best way to put it.

Freddie Gibbs: [Laughs]

I threw my tape out on the street and watch my tape lift off
Without a track with Weezy, Kanye, or the fake Rick Ross
-Freddie Gibbs “Crushin’ Feelings”

Hiptics.com: I’m from Florida, you know, I’m not going to lie, I enjoyed Rick Ross’ first two CD’s for what they were until I found out that he was a correctional officer, but then it wasn’t even just that, but it was the fact he lied about it when they asked him, and I just felt like, ‘okay, what are you hiding here?’ I’m curious; cause for me, I just deleted all his songs, I can’t ever take him serious anymore. Why do you think it is that there’s so many established MC’s, like I can think notably, the Clipse, that are still doing songs with this guy? Why is the hip hop community being like, ‘you’re a fraud, we’re not going to mess with you?’

Do you think it matters that Rick Ross used to work as a correctional officer, yet glorifies drug-dealing?

Freddie Gibbs: [Laughs] I mean, you know, I ask myself that, too. But I mean, at the end of the day, man, I guess it’s all a business. And a lot of these dudes want to do business with him. It’s probably a money opportunity for them. I mean, I think the brother make good music or he wouldn’t be where he at, but like you said, that whole little situation struck me as awkward. It makes you not look at a person the same. I ain’t got nothing to hide in my life. Everything that I’ve ever done is on the table. Everything about me is basically in print. I ain’t never been no snitch. I ain’t never snitched on nobody. You can check the paperwork. I done been to jail, got a jail record. I ain’t never snitched on nobody. I ain’t never been no motherfucking police. Yea, I done been in school, been through the military, and all throughout the streets. I let all of that be known. My father was even a police officer at one point.

Poppa was a copper so other children ain’t wanna play with me
Had to go extra harder to show em’ it wasn’t no fake in me
Dealer, killers, and bangers relate to me
Cause I never been a bitch or a snitch
SmokingGun can’t Alfamega me
-Freddie Gibbs “Nigga Machine”

Freddie Gibbs: I don’t have nothing to hide, man. Everything that I’m rapping about is real. I’ve experienced it and gone through it. So when dudes rap all day, rhyming, preach preach preach that they’re keeping it real, keeping it real, keeping it real, I just can’t respect that. I just think that they create a fucked up image for a lot of kids. You got a lot of kids who think they gon’ get all into rap so they can get into the dope game. Nigga, I’m rapping to get away from all that bullshit…I’m doing this to better myself. I’m doing this to give you the vivd depiction of what I’m coming from so you know. I’m trying to stray you away from this shit. I’m not trying to tell you to go be no motherfuckin’ kingpin, my nigga. All the kingpins dead or in jail. If a motherfucker out here telling you he’s a kingpin, and he rapping, then that shit is not real.

bought deeper than rap on itunes today man…good stuff

  2. Cfro says:

I can’t get down to a CD full of drug tales from the perspective of a guy who used to work in law enforcement. Rick Rawse makes good production choices, but again, he’s a fraud, which ruins the dope beats he raps over.

    Freddie Gibbs > Rick Ross

  3. Will says:

fraud or not, he’s getting good at rapping and no one picks beats like him. he must have paid out the ass to make “maybach music 2″ but it’s still one of the best rap records of last year. ross rhymes about superficial shit anyway, i don’t think it really matters if he’s legitimately “been there” or not. he’s got a unique sound and persona. there are plenty of real drug dealers/criminals who couldn’t tell a story half as good as officer ricky.

oh AND he’s sold about 100,000 more records than 50 cent.

  4. Will says:

*sorry 100,000 more than before i self destruct

  5. Cfro says:

I see what you’re saying, but I have to correct one technical thing:

As of LAST WEEK, 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct had scanned 365,266 copies. The album was released in November of 2009.

Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap hit stores in April of 2009, SEVEN MONTHS before 50’s Before I Self Destruct. To date (1/20/10), Rick Ross’ album has scanned 408,784 copies.

= 43,518 copies difference. I’m confident that within seven months, 50’s physical sales will surpass Ross’.

As far as DIGITAL SALES are concerned, Before I Self Destruct has already surpassed Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap. See for yourself: http://www.hiptics.com/2010/01/03/what-rappers-sold-the-most-digital-albums-in-2009-full-breakdown/
