I’m from the same portion of the map as Plies so I was aware of his whole movement well before the 239 representative hit the commercial scene with “Shawty.” This song, “Take Off,” was the first Plies song I ever heard, and is from an underground mixtape called 30 Days (it appears on other mixtapes, as well). If I remember correctly, Jesse Van Davis (R.I.P.) introduced me. If you want to understand who Plies is as an artist, this is the first song I would suggest.
And I got something that most of these rap niggas lack/And that’s a street resume that goes way back/A young nigga, fourteen, jumped out the porch/And I was the young nigga that all the old goons coached/The same niggas in prison now showed me the ropes/And they ain’t got nothing to live for, I’m their only hope
So what is Plies saying? To paraphrase his verses, I think he’s essentially saying: ‘I’m here. I’m the realest. All these rappers are fake. I lived the lifestyle they glorify, except I have the morals that they lack. I respect the streets and the OG’s that came before me. They taught me everything I know. I’m going represent for them, and make them proud as I obtain success and stay true to the principles I committed to as a youth. All these phonies get caught and then turn to snakes, telling on their own friends to save themselves. Their time is over. It’s Plies time. Anything less than real is unacceptable. I’m not your friend, rapper. I’m the truth.’
I got a message for the jack boys, keep scoping/Until you rob me, pussy nigga, you just hoping/This ain’t something that just happened, I been G-Code/I been through too much, if I was pussy, it woulda showed/I learned not to fuck with pussies a long time ago/And me and lames don’t even vibe, you already know
I’ll conclude with with a message tattooed on his chest: Money means nothin without Respect.

Happy Valentines Day, Hipset! I was listening to D-12’s Devils Night and thought it would be really cool if someone took all of Eminem’s verses from that album and mixed them together in one song. Just for some context, at this point in his career, Eminem was riding the wave of success that was brought on by the Detroit MC’s Marshall Mathers LP. The commercial appeal of Shady’s sophomore album allowed him to give his partners-in-rhyme (Big Proof, Bizarre, Swift, Kon Artis, & Kuniva) some shine. Oh, and Mr. Mathers was one of the most controversial figures in America at this point. Detroit city, stand up!

An anthem for anyone “taking chances on the highway” in the form of trafficking illegal narcotics. You don’t have to be a drug dealer to dig this one. The vibe of the song is fit for anyone trying to make their way in a dog-eat-dog world.
MP3 DOWNLOAD:Juicy J & Project Pat – “Break It Down”
If you’re looking for knowledge, then don’t “Break It Down.” However, if you want something to bump, then you’ll enjoy “Break It Down” blasting out your speakers. And don’t let the content distract you from Project Pat’s flow motion.

A ridiculous song about beautiful women. Degrading? Yes, but it bumps in the system! And Project Pat goes crazy on the first verse. (Get ready for the fresh switch-up at 1:26.)
O-H-I-O! It all started in Feburary of 2009 when Dipset’s Cam’Ron returned to the forefront with a new music video for a new song slated to appear on his new album (2009’s Crime Pays). More specifically, Killa Cam hit the hip hop game over the head with “Get It In Ohio.” Ohio residents FINALLY had a hip hop anthem to bump while their whips maneuvered icy roads and grey skies. Cam’Ron’s “Get It In Ohio” was just the beginning, as the Harlem native merely wanted to pay homage to the state where he used to get his hustle on. Ohio natives Chip The Ripper, Kid Cudi, and others had more to say!
Kid Cudi (from Cleveland, OH) had hip hop fans and pop fans alike buzzing over his stoner anthem, “Day N Nite.” The song reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, and helped launch his debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day [click here to download Cudi's album]. His success landed him on tour with Lady Gaga, and helped lead the way for Chip Tha Ripper… Read the rest of this entry »
It’s good to hear more Juelz Santana and Lil Wayne collaborations. I’m a believer that when two rappers collaborate, it brings out the best in them. After all, hip hop is the most competitive artform on the planet.
Hiptics.com: I know loyalty has been a prevailing theme in your music. What rappers outside of your [Skull Gang/Dipset] camp that you consider friends?
Juelz Santana: I mean I fuck with niggas. Weezy my nigga. I fuck with Weezy hardbody. I’m one of them niggas; I’m cool. As long as a nigga don’t cross my line…This shit is about money…There’s enough money for everybody.
Are rappers making more money when rap music is available for free online? According to a recent study in the UK, the answer is yes. In the words of Bill Kirkpatrick:
Label profits down, artist profits up–looks to me like the system is working if the people who actually create the value are seeing more reward from it.
Twitter blew up in 2010. Almost every known MC is using the social media tool to connect with fans and promote their work. But who is really worth following? If you’re a loyal Hiptics reader then you know EbGb is an underground star hailing from Southwest Florida. The 24 year old MC has shared stages with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, D-12, and Obie Trice, but had never heard a single Gucci Mane verse…until Tuesday night when he called in for an interview on my radio show.
If you’ve listened to EbGb’s new album Circling The Drain, you know he’s very lyrical. Don’t get me wrong, Eb can make the clubs go crazy with songs like “Crazy Nasty Bounce,” but even on such a song EbGb’s verses are crafted with skill and care. So how will EbGb react after hearing Gucci Mane rap for the first time?
The 5-minute clip starts with me previewing the mixdown of Eminem’s verses from D-12’s Devil’s Night album. If you haven’t heard the Eminem mix yet then you’re missing out (his verses on that album were crazy!). By the end of the segment, EbGb and I make radio history. Just listen, and you will understand.
Chip Tha Ripper, Big Sean, and Curren$y the Hot Spitta get busy over a Chuck Inglish production on “Fat Raps.” DJ Khaled should put together a collaboration like this! Who had the best verse?
When you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control. Even if you are saying something banal, it will seem original if you make it vague, open-ended, and sphinxlike. Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less. The more you say, the more likely you are to say something foolish. (Summary of Law #4 found in The 48 Laws Of Power)
Hiptics Highlight: “But the human tongue is a beast that few can master. It strains constantly to break out of its cage, and if it is not tamed, it will run wild and cause you grief. Power cannot accrue to those who squander their treasure of words” (pg. 33)
50 Cent’s Application of Law #4: Eminem recalls meeting 50 Cent for the first time on a recent episode of VH1’s Behind The Music. 50 Cent’s controlled tongue made Eminem, one of the most powerful and respected individuals in the rap industry, feel inferior to 50.
Viewers of the 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards were caught off guard when immediately following Gucci Mane and Plies’ performance of their hit single “Wasted,” a short public service announcement from Gucci Mane himself was played over the TV screen.
Gucci Mane nearly landed back in prison this past summer. While details are hard to come by, word on the street is that Gucci Mane failed a court ordered drug test. Luckily, Gucci Mane was able to avoid more hard time by agreeing to enter into a drug rehabilitation program. As evident by the Gucci Mane PSA played during the 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards, the 12-steps are playing an important role in Gucci’s life as a bubbling rap superstar.
However, Gucci’s time in rehab was not his only punishment for failing a drug test this past summer. An industry insider revealed to Hiptics that Gucci Mane is currently unable to perform anywhere outside the Georgia border, and cannot legally partake in any kind of interview, despite the fact that Gucci’s upcoming album (“The State Vs Radric Davis”) is due December 8th.
During his headlining CMJ performance at S.O.B.’s, Mike Posner brings out Big Sean to perform their underground hit, “Smoke N’ Drive.” Members of 2AM Club, who had a set at S.O.B.’s before Big Sean took the stage, add some music over the “Smoke N’ Drive” instrumental. The second half of this exclusive performance video is Mike Posner and Big Sean’s live version of “Cooler Than Me.”
Mike Posner and Big Sean are both young artists worth keeping an eye on. Their story is pretty unique as these two talented individuals were friends before the Internet fame. Take a look at what Big Sean, who is signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, told Hiptics about his relationship with Mike Posner.
Hiptics.com:You were talking about crossing genres. I noticed you’ve been doing a lot of collaborations with [singer] Mike Posner. I was wondering as to how that relationship came to be.
Big Sean: Well me and Mike Posner been buddies before he was ‘Mike Posner’ and before I was really ‘Big Sean.’ Me and him used to go over to eachothers houses and work on music and just kick it. We’re really just friends before anything so it’s kind of crazy that me and him are both doing well in music and getting a name for ourselves. I don’t know how many other life stories are like that where people are in the industry and were really friends before. Me and him are just buddies, and we’re definitely going to keep making music together. I just talked to him yesterday actually about some new stuff. [Full Interview]
Beanie Sigel uses “Average Cat” to vent his frustration about Jay-Z’s business practices. DJ Kay Slay, aka The Drama King, gets the exclusive on this radio rip of Beanie Sigel’s Jay-Z diss. Remember, beefs/battles are strictly lyrical. Hiptics would never promote a battle that we believed would eventually turn violent. However, we’re 100% pro lyrical sparring. Aggressive competition, anyone?
