Smoke DZA ft. Devin The Dude, Curren$y, & Asher Roth – “Marley & Me” Music Video

    January 31st, 2010

Smoke DZA links up with Devin The Dude, Curren$y, and Asher Roth for “Marley & Me.” Is hip hop leading the movement for marijuana reform?

Dallas Embraces Asher Roth & Kid Cudi’s “Great Hangover Tour”

    August 3rd, 2009

Take a look at Hunter Hauk’s review of Asher Roth & Kid Cudi’s “Great Hangover Tour.”

Around 10 p.m., the marijuana- and debauchery-loving Roth entered the stage in a cloud of fog, riding a small cart he labeled the “blunt cruiser.” The red-haired, scrawny rapper’s wildly entertaining set has evolved quite a bit from his appearances at South by Southwest in March. A live drummer, DJ and a costume-sporting hype man helped re-create the atmosphere first seen in the video for his hit “I Love College.”

Asher Roth: Too Boring For Battle Rap

    July 14th, 2009

Asher Roth got ether’d by Copywrite, but never responded. Well, now we know why.

“I’m not a battle MC,” says Roth. “I don’t like using my powers to tell people they suck. I’d rather just rap about what’s going on in my head.” (NY Post)

Translation: Real hip hop scares me. Unfortunately what’s going on in Asher’s head is boring and borderline idiotic. You know those kids that go to college and start thinking they understand things about the world that no one else does? He’s like that, except with a megaphone.

Copywrite Ether’s Asher Roth With “Cremation” Music Video

    June 15th, 2009

I’ve been sleeping on Copywrite and that will stop starting today. Here’s the story:

Asher Roth threw some subliminal shots at Copywrite, an underground OG from Columbus, Ohio, with a song called “Silly Boy” [listen]. The likely reason Asher recorded “Silly Boy” is because Copywrite was very vocal about Asher Roth biting Eminem’s voice/style.

The fact that Asher Roth felt confident enough to diss Copy was a poor move because Copywrite absolutely murdered hip hop’s college mascot with “Cremation.” The track dropped in March, but today marks the release of the music video. My favorite quotables are below: Read the rest of this entry »

Asher Roth Releases Apology About “Nappy Headed Hoes” Joke

    April 30th, 2009

    asher-roth-sucks

A great letter of apology produced by Mr. Roth. I thought it was worth posting.

As of late, statements I’ve made have been stirring up much controversy and speculation. It is in my best interest that I feel I should address these instances personally and specifically. Truth: I am 23 year old imperfect human being who’s world is drastically changing around him. Facebook is no longer for just me and my friends. Twitter is no longer solely for the watchful eye of my parents. A new responsibility and voice has been placed upon me and is being heard well beyond my immediate peers. I’ve been receiving a crash course on perspectives and a very real sensitivity that exists and is an essential part of our world. With that, I’d like to sincerely apologize for any words that have been misinterpreted and may have offended any man, woman or child.

Asher Roth’s “Asleep In The Bread Aisle” Gets Ether’d

    April 24th, 2009

asher-rothWill from WDUB put me on to this. Take a look at what Ian from Pitchfork thought of Asleep in the Bread Aisle. Ouch!

Of course, Roth has an army of bloggers hungry for a piece of that A&R action, and they insinuate any dismissal of Roth is borne out of self-loathing. And yet the only rapper willing to be on the same track with the guy is legendary hermit Busta Rhymes, who shows up on the double-time showcase “Lion’s Roar” and still exhibits some phoned-in dominance of his host. Surely these aren’t guys who’d cosign on a weak artist in the interest of commerce! Why can’t you ride for his cause? But it’s not a self-loathing thing, and it’s not a race thing– Asleep feels less like an album of music meant to entertain than an assumption that you can actually bump a marketing plan in your cars and house parties. Whether or not Asher Roth is some sort of sign that hip-hop is dead, there’s no doubt that he’s proof that the music industry is still very much alive.

    Eminem Co-Signs Asher Roth

    April 24th, 2009

Eminem is a nice guy. Imagine if he said, “fuck Asher Roth, he stole my style.” I think it’s safe to say that Asher would have to fall back on his college education and pick a new career. Did anyone buy Asleep in the Bread Aisle?

“Asher Roth, I haven’t had a chance to, like, really get into everything, like, really get into what he’s about, because I’ve only hear a couple songs. There was talk about people saying he sounded like me, and he was doing this and that and, you know, trying to take what I do and do it. You know, shit like that. I’ve heard things. But the stuff that I’ve heard from him honestly, which certainly isn’t enough for me to make my own opinion and say, ‘Yeah, he does sound like me’ or ‘No, he doesn’t.’ But the couple of songs I’ve head, I don’t really think he does. You know what I mean? He’s doing his own thing. I can respect it, too, because at the end of the day, I think he’s dope.”

Props to RapRadar. I wish Paul Rosenberg (Eminem’s manager) was my business partner so I could score all these Eminem exclusives. I like being the underdog, though.

Asher Roth “Asleep In The Bread Aisle” Review

    April 21st, 2009

Aftertaste: I respect Asher’s craft, but Asleep in the Bread Aisle isn’t really my style of hip hop; mainly because this album is a more hip pop alternative. I’m sure plenty of people will like it, though.

(I write reviews like this: I listen to the song for the first time and write my initial thoughts. Check it out…)

    01. Lark On My Go-Kart
Nice intro. Asher Roth drops enjoyable verses full of clever wordplay on this alternative funkish instrumental.

    02. Blunt Cruisin
Funny song about cruisin’. No mean 16’s on this one, just goofy sing-a-longs.

    03. I Love College
A fantasy about college life geared towards the high school homeys.

    04. La Di Da
This is a cool song. I didn’t expect Don Cannon to produce an instrumental like this.

“Suggest you get off Instant Message…”

    05. Be By Myself ft. Cee-Lo
Sounds like something Justin Timberlake passed on.

Asher Roth – “La Di Da” MP3 Download (Prod. by Don Cannon)

    April 14th, 2009

I mess with this. The beat fits Asher’s styles real well. Did you know Asher’s Asleep In The Bread Aisle drops the same week as Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap? Who’s going to have better first week sales? Let’s talk about it…

New Videos: Asher Roth Performs at MTV Spring Break – Readers React

    March 30th, 2009

    asher-roth1

Asher Roth does not flow. He says the same thing over and over and over and over again. Watch the MTV Spring Break videos. Anyone can put together a bunch of jibberish that rhymes and then repeat the chorus several times. If you watch the videos also, you see the crowd get hyper over his one hit wonder ‘I Love College’, but the other songs the crowd just goes kind of dormant. To be honest I think all of Asher’s “raps” are very shallow, immature and childish. Most sucessful hip-hop artists tell a story about their life, problems growing up poor, drug dealing to try to live the American dream, ego and of course rivalry between gangs or crews. Asher with his suburbian silver spoon in his mouth knows nothing about that, If he loves college so much he should go back, continue his education and stop trying to play hip-hop game. I agree with most of the people on here they are looking to make a quick buck off him and he will just be a one hit wonder.
