Chris Franco, executive producer of From The Underground Up, recently explained to a listener the concept of the mixtape:
I sent a select few up-and-coming artists my concept for the mixtape. I wanted each of their songs to make listeners feel their hunger for success, as well as showcase their skills as MC’s. I then took audio recordings of a few specific interviews I conducted with more established artists and picked out some key points of the interview that embody the sound/theme of the mixtape. They fit well within the tracklist. The mixtape starts off with much more lyrical oriented MC’s, but after “Naledge Interlude” (he’s a acclaimed indie rapper from Chicago, graduated from UPenn) where Naledge speaks on being a multifaceted human being, the song that follows (“Made”) is a much more street, gritty, down south song.
